Yuya Ishii - Japanese Film Director and Screenwriter

Yuya Ishii (石井裕也) is a Japanese film director and screenwriter. Born in 1983 in Saitama Prefecture, Japan, he pursued his higher education at the Osaka University of Arts.

Career and Filmography

Ishii has maintained a prolific career in Japanese cinema and television, directing and writing numerous feature films, drama series, and television movies. His directorial and screenwriting credits span over two decades, beginning with early works such as Bare-assed Japan (2005) and Rebel, Jiro's Love (2006).

Throughout his career, Ishii has helmed critically recognized projects across various genres. Some of his prominent feature films include Sawako Decides (2010), Mitsuko Delivers (2011), The Great Passage (2013), The Vancouver Asahi (2014), The Tokyo Night Sky Is Always the Densest Shade of Blue (2017), Almost a Miracle (2019), The Asian Angel (2021), A Madder Red (2021), The Moon (2023), and Honshin (2024). In addition to feature films, he has directed television drama series and TV movies, including Candy House (2015) for TBS and Disney+'s House of the Owl (2024).

At the 37th Japan Academy Prize ceremony held on March 7, 2014, he won both Picture of the Year and Director of the Year for his work on The Great Passage. Additionally, he received the Best Director award at the 53rd Blue Ribbon Awards on February 15, 2011, for Sawako Decides.
