Winter Butterfly (Korean: 겨울나비; RR: Gyewool Nabi) is a 2011 South Korean drama film directed by Kim Gyu-Min. The film explores the daily struggles and hardships faced by citizens in North Korea, specifically focusing on the impact of food shortages on family life.

Plot
The narrative centers on an 11-year-old boy named Jin-Ho (played by Jung Seung-Won) who lives with his mother (played by Park So-Yeon). To survive, Jin-Ho gathers and sells wood. The boy harbors a deep-seated fear of being abandoned. Following a conflict involving a friend, Jin-Ho ventures into the mountains to collect wood, where he becomes lost and faces extreme cold and starvation. While his mother desperately searches for him, Jin-Ho eventually manages to return home. However, the film portrays this event as merely the beginning of a series of greater misfortunes for the pair.

Production and Background
Director Kim Gyu-Min, who was born in North Korea, directed the film based on a true story. Kim previously attended Rigyesoon University in North Korea before defecting to South Korea due to his dissatisfaction with the North Korean political system. Kim has stated that he intended the film to provide a more realistic depiction of daily life in North Korea, noting his observation that many South Koreans possessed limited knowledge of the reality of life in the North despite media coverage.
