Uprising (2024 Film)

Uprising (Korean: 전,란; RR: Jeon, Ran) is a 2024 South Korean historical action film directed by Kim Sang-Man. The screenplay was written by Shin Cheol and Park Chan-Wook, with the latter also serving as a producer. The film premiered globally on Netflix on October 11, 2024, following its world premiere as the opening film of the 29th Busan International Film Festival on October 2, 2024.

Plot

Set in the late 16th century during the Joseon Dynasty, the story follows the divergent paths of two childhood companions: Yi Jong-Ryeo (Park Jeong-Min), the son of a powerful military family, and his servant, Cheon-Young (Gang Dong-Won). Despite his low social status, Cheon-Young develops exceptional swordsmanship skills. As the Japanese invasions of Korea create widespread chaos, King Seonjo (Cha Seung-Won) abandons his subjects to flee north. While the common people organize into a righteous army to resist the invaders, the King labels these defenders as traitors. The film depicts the eventual confrontation between Jong-Ryeo, who remains loyal to the King, and Cheon-Young, who aligns with the righteous army.
