The Berlin File (2013 Film)

The Berlin File (Korean: 베를린) is a 2013 South Korean spy thriller film directed and written by Ryoo Seung-wan. The film follows the complex political and personal conflicts of intelligence agents operating in Berlin, Germany.

Plot

The story centers on Pyo Jong-sung (Ha Jung-woo), a North Korean "ghost" agent stationed in Berlin. During an illegal arms deal gone wrong, he encounters South Korean NIS agent Jung Jin-soo (Han Suk-kyu). As the situation escalates, Pyo finds himself targeted by Dong Myung-soo (Ryoo Seung-bum), the son of a high-ranking North Korean official, who arrives in Berlin to seize control of the local operations. Pyo and his wife, Ryun Jung-hee (Gianna Jun), become fugitives, pursued by multiple intelligence agencies as they attempt to survive the political machinations surrounding them.

Production

Principal photography for The Berlin File commenced on April 16, 2012, at the Namyangju Studio Complex in South Korea. The initial scenes focused on the surveillance operations conducted by the South Korean NIS team. In early May 2012, the production moved to international locations, including Berlin, Germany, and Latvia, to capture the film's setting.

Release

The film was released in South Korea on January 29, 2013. It received a North American release beginning on February 15, 2013, with screenings in various cities including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Toronto. Additional screenings in San Francisco commenced on February 22, 2013.

Reception and Awards

The Berlin File was recognized for its technical achievements. At the 34th Blue Dragon Film Awards in 2013, the film won Best Cinematography (Choi Young-hwan) and Best Lighting (Kim Sung-kwan). These same honors were also awarded to the film at the 50th Daejong Film Awards. Additionally, Ha Jung-woo received the Best Actor award at the 49th Baeksang Arts Awards.
