Taiso Shiyou yo (Japanese: 体操しようよ) is a 2018 Japanese feature film directed by Takeo Kikuchi. The film explores themes of retirement, family dynamics, and the transition into a new phase of life.

Plot

The story follows Michitaro Sano, played by Masao Kusakari, a man who has spent years dedicated to his career. Following the death of his wife 18 years prior, he has lived with his daughter, Yumiko Sano (Fumino Kimura). Upon his retirement, Michitaro finds himself struggling to adjust to a sudden abundance of free time. His daughter, who manages the household, encourages him to take on more domestic responsibilities. Tensions and adjustments arise as Michitaro learns that his daughter has a boyfriend and is considering marriage. Seeking a new routine, he begins attending a local radio calisthenics group, which serves as a catalyst for his personal growth.

Production

The film was directed by Takeo Kikuchi, with a screenplay written by Kiyoto Wada and Tadaatsu Shundo. It was produced by Tadaatsu Shundo, Motoo Kawabata, and Kaori Sakano, with cinematography by Yasuyuki Sasaki. The film was released in Japan on November 9, 2018, with a total runtime of 109 minutes.
