Seire (2021 Film)
Seire is a South Korean psychological horror film written and directed by Park Kang. The film premiered at the Busan International Film Festival in October 2021 and was released theatrically in South Korea on November 24, 2022. The narrative centers on the conflict between modern skepticism and the adherence to traditional folk beliefs regarding the protection of newborns.
Plot
Woo-Jin (Seo Hyun-Woo) is a new father whose wife, Hae-Mi (Sim Eun-Woo), strictly observes the seire—a traditional 21-day period following a birth during which the household is kept isolated from outsiders to protect the infant from bad luck. Despite his personal skepticism, Woo-Jin complies with these restrictions.
The tension escalates when Woo-Jin receives news of the death of his former girlfriend, Se-Young (Ryu Abel). Although his wife forbids him from attending the funeral due to the potential spiritual consequences for their child, Woo-Jin secretly visits the wake. There, he encounters Se-Young's twin sister, Ye-Young. Following his attendance at the funeral, a series of unsettling and ominous events begin to plague Woo-Jin's family, forcing him to confront the consequences of his actions.
