Mori no Asagao

Mori no Asagao is a Japanese television drama series that aired on TV Tokyo from October 18 to December 20, 2010. The series consists of 10 episodes and explores the complex moral and emotional landscape surrounding the death penalty system in Japan. It is based on the award-winning manga of the same name by Mamora Goda, which was serialized in Futabasha's Manga Action between 2004 and 2007.

Plot

The story follows Naoki Oikawa, a new prison officer assigned to the death-row section. Through his daily duties, Oikawa witnesses the profound psychological impact of the death penalty on inmates, who live under the constant uncertainty of an execution that can be carried out without prior warning. His perspective is challenged when he encounters Mitsuru Watase, a death-row inmate convicted of killing a man who had attacked his parents. The narrative reveals that Oikawa and Watase share a childhood connection, having played on the same baseball team, which complicates their relationship within the prison environment.

The drama was directed by Akimitsu Sasaki, Munenobu Yamauchi, and Makito Murakami, with a screenplay written by Daisuke Habara, Shizuka Ouki, and Akihiro Tago. The series maintained a weekly runtime on Monday nights at 22:00. According to data from Video Research, Ltd., the series recorded an average viewership rating of 3.6% in the Kanto region during its broadcast run.
