Kanae Minato: Japanese Mystery Novelist and Screenwriter

Kanae Minato (湊 かなえ) is a prominent Japanese novelist and screenwriter recognized primarily for her contributions to the mystery and thriller genres. Born in 1973 in Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, Minato has established herself as a major figure in contemporary Japanese fiction, with many of her novels adapted into feature films and television drama series.

Literary Works and Adaptations

Minato's written works have frequently served as source material for Japanese cinema and television productions. Her debut novel, Confessions (Kokuhaku), published in August 2008 by Futabasha, was adapted into a critically acclaimed feature film released in 2010. Other notable novel adaptations include Penance (Shokuzai), published in 2009, which received both film and television drama adaptations in 2012; The Snow White Murder Case (2014); Night's Tightrope (2016); Motherhood (Bosei), published in 2012 and adapted into a film in 2022; and Mirai, scheduled for release in 2026.

Television and Screenwriting

In addition to providing source material for adaptations, Minato has contributed directly to screenplays for television. She wrote the screenplay for the Fuji TV drama series High School Entrance Exam (Koko Nyushi), broadcast in 2012. Numerous other novels and short story collections of hers have been adapted into serial television dramas and television movies by networks such as TBS, WOWOW, Fuji TV, and TV Asahi, including Testimony of N (2014), Reverse (2017), and Poison Daughter, Holy Mother (2019).
