Inseparable Bros (2019 Film)

Inseparable Bros (Korean: 나의 특별한 형제; RR: Naui Teukbyeolhan Hyungje) is a 2019 South Korean comedy-drama film directed by Yook Sang-Hyo. The film explores the deep, platonic bond between two men who, despite not being biologically related, have lived as brothers for two decades. The story highlights themes of interdependence, friendship, and social inclusion.

Plot

The narrative centers on Se-Ha (played by Shin Ha-Kyun), a man with a physical disability who possesses a sharp intellect, and Dong-Goo (played by Lee Kwang-Soo), who has an intellectual disability but is physically capable. Having relied on each other for twenty years, their lives are altered when they encounter Mi-Hyun (played by Esom), a woman who interacts with them without prejudice and encourages them to engage more fully with the outside world.

Production

The film was directed by Yook Sang-Hyo, who also contributed to the screenplay alongside Lee Soo-Ah and Na Hyeon. The project was produced by Moon Yong-Chan, Lee Eun, Shim Jae-Myung, and Ha Jung-Wan. During its development phase, the film utilized the working title Naui Teukgeub Hyungje (My Special Brother).

Principal photography commenced on May 23, 2018, following a script reading session held on May 18, 2018. Filming concluded on August 17, 2018. The film was distributed by Next Entertainment World and released in South Korea on May 1, 2019.

Reception and Awards

The film received positive recognition for its performances, particularly that of Lee Kwang-Soo. At the 56th Baeksang Arts Awards held on June 5, 2020, Lee Kwang-Soo was awarded Best Supporting Actor for his role as Dong-Goo.
