Honokaa Boy (2009 Film)

Honokaa Boy (Japanese: ホノカアボーイ) is a 2009 Japanese drama film directed by Atsushi Sanada. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Leo Yoshida. It marked the feature-length directorial debut for Sanada and served as the first major motion picture lead role for actor Masaki Okada.

Plot

The story follows Leo, a young Japanese college student who travels to Hawaii. While living in the small, close-knit town of Honokaa on the Hamakua Coast, he encounters various local residents and develops a relationship with an older woman named Bee.

Production

The film was shot on location along the Hamakua Coast in Hawaii. Principal photography took place between mid-October and early November 2007.

Reception and Awards

The film was featured at the 29th Hawaii International Film Festival in October 2009. Masaki Okada received several accolades for his performance, including the Best New Artist award at the 34th Hochi Film Awards (2009), Best Newcomer at the 52nd Blue Ribbon Awards (2010), and Rookie of the Year at the 33rd Japan Academy Prize (2010).
