Fatal Frame (2014 Film)

Fatal Frame, released in Japan as Gekijoban Rei Zero (劇場版 零 ゼロ), is a 2014 Japanese horror film directed by Mari Asato. The film is based on the novel Fatal Frame: A Curse Affecting Only Girls by Eiji Otsuka. It was distributed by Kadokawa Pictures and premiered in Japan on September 26, 2014.

Plot

The story takes place at an all-girls high school situated in an isolated mountain village. Aya, played by Ayami Nakajo, resides in the school dormitory. After experiencing a disturbing vision of her own death, she isolates herself within her room. As students begin to disappear, a rumor spreads that the missing girls had all seen a photograph of a student who bears a striking resemblance to Aya. Michi, played by Aoi Morikawa, lives in the same dormitory and begins to suspect that Aya is connected to the mysterious disappearances, particularly after her friend Kasumi vanishes.

Production

Principal photography for the film commenced on March 27, 2014. The film features a cast of young Japanese actors, including Ayami Nakajo and Aoi Morikawa in the lead roles.

Release and Reception

Following its Japanese theatrical release, the film was screened internationally, including at the 19th Fantasia Film Festival in 2015, where it held its North American premiere.
