Dong Yi (Television Series)

Dong Yi is a South Korean historical television drama that aired on MBC from March 22 to October 12, 2010. Directed by Lee Byung-hoon and Kim Sang-hyub, the series consists of 60 episodes and explores the life of Choi Suk-bin, a historical figure who rose from a lowly water maid to a royal concubine during the Joseon Dynasty.

Plot Overview

The narrative follows the journey of Dong-yi, later known as Choi Suk-bin, portrayed by Han Hyo-joo. Initially working within the royal palace as a water maid, she eventually catches the attention of King Suk-jong, played by Ji Jin-hee. The series depicts her elevation to the status of a royal concubine and her eventual role as the mother of Yeong-jo, who would become a future king of Joseon.

Historical Context and Terminology

The series is based on historical events surrounding the life of the real Choi Suk-bin. The drama utilizes specific court titles to denote the hierarchy of the king's wives. The term Suk-bin and Hee-bin refer to specific ranks of royal concubines, while Wang Hu (Queen) refers to the king's primary wife, who held the highest position among the royal consorts.

Production

Filming for the series commenced in February 2010. The production reunited lead actress Han Hyo-joo and actor Bae Su-bin, who had previously collaborated on the SBS drama Brilliant Legacy.
